Kindle TouchKindles: Would they replace actual physical books?Ever since their launch of the Kindle in 2007, the Kindle has now become common place in our lives. When we now refer to electronic readers, it is common to think of the world “Kindle”.

However are they that good? And would they likely to substitute for physical books? As I am a physical book lover, I by no means considered getting one. But having been gifted with one, let me tell you what I think about it.

The Nice Things
1) The largest draw for me is the convenience of keeping all your files in one nifty small 7’ gadget. (I'm using Kindle Touch model. With prices having dropped in the last year, the Kindles on Sale start from $79. You can find the Kindle Touchscreen model for $99 (with wireless) or for $149 (with 3G capability).

Whenever I go on holidays, I usually possess 2 books as well as other work-related paperwork. But recently when I took a short break, I had 3 pdf guides, a few newspapers and 2 books on the e-reader. There is a lot to be said about

decreasing the load on my luggage, yet having so many books.2) I read for long periods without hurting my eyes. It was surely quite different to reading off some type of computer display screen. I had heard how the ereader was good for this before, but it is not until I started reading off it that I really believed it.

3) I like the notes/books capabilities that are housed in the Kindle, together with the use of the web browser.

The Not so Nice things

Initially when I first looked at a Kindle e-reader, I felt it looked fairly plain; and not in any way like a modern electronic device should look like. But after reading several books on it now, I can now understand why the screens are generally purposely created to appear to be like this. The white and black monitors uses innovative e-ink technological innovation eliminating glare from the display. This can make reading for long times a less strenuous for the eyes, thereby a much more enjoyable knowledge.

Back to the question: Are they as good as books, or useful for reading?

Definitely yes. For pure convenience and keeping heaps of paper down, it helps to be able to carry several types of books, papers, in a single gadget.

Mind you, I will still always have a book in hand. But now, I can see myself personally having both a Kindle and a book alongside each other - with the Kindle as my travelling companion.
